Changing to Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu here I come!  For the last few months I’ve been dealing with strange things going on with my laptop.  Windows close by themselves.  I call it the invisible hands of Microsoft!  I think I’ve picked up a virus that is so obscure that none of the virus or spybot programs can detect it.  It is probably a zombie, which is a program that allows people to steal your bandwidth.  That slows your connection down.  I don’t really know what is going on but whatever it is, its driving me nuts.

I gave Ubuntu a test run the other day.  I ran it from the CD ROM.  Yes you can order a FREE disk from

Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu’s web site and they will mail it to you, even in the Philippines.  I went ahead and downloaded it but I also ordered both the desktop and server versions.

My laptop is getting old and gets slow trying to run the demanding CPU software of Windows programs.  One of the things that slows Windows down is virus protection.  You don’t need virus protection when running Linux!  So you save resources and you save money!

Ubuntu is a version of Linux.  Some people refer to it as a flavor of Linux.  It is probably the most windows like version os Linux.  It will read disk using NTFS which is the more common file system used by Microsoft Windows.

The biggest problem with some of the programs I use.  Roboform, a password management program can be made to work with Ubuntu but its going to require some changes I don’t really want to make.  I’ll have to give up Adobe Lightroom and probably Macromedia program I like to use such as Dreamweaver and Homesite.  Quicken is going to be huge blow.  I simply cannot do without that software but I can install it on Jessie’s computer.  The same is true for all of the above but it is going to be a painful process, especially with Lightroom.

Linux is all about being free though.  You can actually get support from the companies if you pay for it but most of the software for it is free.  They even give away the code and other will improve on it.  This is called open source software.   FireFox is open source software.  People use to turn up their nose at open source software, thinking it meant low quality but that is just not true.  Open source has to be a concern for Microsoft, even if they wont admit it.  Normally that blast it as being inferior but more and more people are learning that’s just not true.

I may give up after a few days and go back to Windows.   Since I have to re-install though, I’m going to give Ubuntu a try.  You don’t have to go chasing down drivers, Ubuntu will recognize all my devices such as sound card, head phones, and USB drives.

I’m hoping it works out, I’m sure it would if I had two PC’s but with only one for now, I may run into troubles I cannot over come.  For now though, I’m going to make my newest friend Ubuntu Linux.
