Changing to Ubuntu Linux
Ubuntu here I come! For the last few months I’ve been dealing with strange things going on with my laptop. Windows close by themselves. I call it the invisible hands of Microsoft! I think I’ve picked up a virus that is so obscure that none of the virus or spybot programs can detect it. It is probably a zombie, which is a program that allows people to steal your bandwidth. That slows your connection down. I don’t really know what is going on but whatever it is, its driving me nuts.
I gave Ubuntu a test run the other day. I ran it from the CD ROM. Yes you can order a FREE disk from
Ubuntu’s web site and they will mail it to you, even in the Philippines. I went ahead and downloaded it but I also ordered both the desktop and server versions.
My laptop is getting old and gets slow trying to run the demanding CPU software of Windows programs. One of the things that slows Windows down is virus protection. You don’t need virus protection when running Linux! So you save resources and you save money!
Ubuntu is a version of Linux. Some people refer to it as a flavor of Linux. It is probably the most windows like version os Linux. It will read disk using NTFS which is the more common file system used by Microsoft Windows.
The biggest problem with some of the programs I use. Roboform, a password management program can be made to work with Ubuntu but its going to require some changes I don’t really want to make. I’ll have to give up Adobe Lightroom and probably Macromedia program I like to use such as Dreamweaver and Homesite. Quicken is going to be huge blow. I simply cannot do without that software but I can install it on Jessie’s computer. The same is true for all of the above but it is going to be a painful process, especially with Lightroom.
Linux is all about being free though. You can actually get support from the companies if you pay for it but most of the software for it is free. They even give away the code and other will improve on it. This is called open source software. FireFox is open source software. People use to turn up their nose at open source software, thinking it meant low quality but that is just not true. Open source has to be a concern for Microsoft, even if they wont admit it. Normally that blast it as being inferior but more and more people are learning that’s just not true.
I may give up after a few days and go back to Windows. Since I have to re-install though, I’m going to give Ubuntu a try. You don’t have to go chasing down drivers, Ubuntu will recognize all my devices such as sound card, head phones, and USB drives.
I’m hoping it works out, I’m sure it would if I had two PC’s but with only one for now, I may run into troubles I cannot over come. For now though, I’m going to make my newest friend Ubuntu Linux.

redpox1st’s last blog post..Running Portable Applications From A TrueCrypt Volume
Thanks repox……..
I’m told wine slows things down a bit?
Hopefully you’ll be around to help. I’m running from a Ubuntu 7.xx CD right now. My 8.x CD is bad so I’m downloading again and will burn it again. I didn’t think I had a good download, I wish I had tested the CD before i formatted. :) Always realize this after we do things, huh?
I’m going to give it a try. I’ve been told Lightroom wont work even under Wine. And I’ll type the above just as soon as Ii get a good install.
Should I just install 7 and upgrade or would a clean install with 8 be a better way to go?
Rusty’s last blog post..Dengue Fever In The Philippines
Hi Rusty – I have a number of computers, and use Ubuntu on most of them. I also have a machine on Mepis Linux and one on XP and another on Vista. I like Ubuntu the best of all of these.
A couple of options for your legacy software that needs Windows. IN addition to Wine, you could also try running some kind of VM software. Or, how about just doing a Win/Linux dual boot so that you can boot into whichever program you wish to use at that particular time?
I have been using Linux for 3 or 4 years now, and love it.
Bob, It is good to know you’re out there there, when I blow this up I can text you.
rusty@rusty-sony:~$ sudo apt-get wine cabextract
Password:
E: Invalid operation wine
rusty@rusty-sony:~$
I just opened a PDF file in Ubuntu. I suspect I”ll find a way to stay with this. I’m going to have to re-install and do a clean install to get to 8.x. Well I don’t have too but I will since I don’t have anything installed yet.
The speed of Ubuntu\Linux is nice.
I had equivlent to full T1 or better when I was in the states, well down it was faster than T1 up was i.5Mb and down was 8Mb so this 2Gb line I have now is so slowwwwwwwwww but that’s not Linux’s fault.
Back to my PDF on SEO.
Hi Rusty – I am not an expert when it comes to Linux, but I will certainly help you if I can. For example, I don’t really know how to use the command line and such.
That’s okay Bob, for now I’m not interested in the Command line. LOL I use to know quite a few commands but not any more. Forgot those long ago.
I’m about to Whipe my drive aagain. Well I’m going to check that my copy of Ubuntu 8 is good first.
I installed Wine last night but I have no clue as to how to make it work, none of my windows programs will run. :)
holy cow. I see the header on the site is broke. LOL I’ve not been able to see that before. i was playing around with the theme a whiile back.
I see all the links are STILL no follow even though I’ve installed comment luv it’s not working. that sucks….
There are some others out there. Most people blogs are nofollow but I think that sucks and I want to do better….
Just rambling about stuff I don’t want to post about. I am loving Ubuntu. Problems with quicken and roboform.. I found a way around roboform but it will be a bit painful. A FREE program called LastPass. Google it, you’ll love it.
Quicken….. I hear a program called CodeWeavers Crossover Office will get some of these things to work but I don’t think it is free.
Hi rusty sorry I ve been away, you have probably worked it out at this stage but the command for installing is actually “sudo apt-get install wine cabextract” (I forgot the install,My Bad)
I would also start a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10.
email me at redpox1st@gmail.com if you need any help with anything.
Thanks Red, before I got to use it real well, the monitor on my notebook kicked the bucket. I’ve not been able to buy an external or replacement.
I didn’t like going back to windows though.
I left windows on my GF computer even though she wanted to change too. I need windows for Photoshop Lightroom and Quicken/Turbo Tax.
I did get wine installed but not using the command prompt. I also go the version that is suppose to be more high powered but it didn’t do much fore me.
I do like linux. I hope you can get back from time to time and thanks much for the email address!
Next time, I’d just register on wordpress and tell the blogger it was there so the entire world does not get your email address. You’re likely sophisticated enough to know that spammers scan websites to harvest email addresses but as you know Google is very good at screening out spam with fewer false positives. I wonder why anyone uses anything other than Google. Hotmail and Yahoo SUCK.
