Leave the US and Say Good-Bye to Freedom of Speech
It is important to remember that when you leave the US and visit or live in a foreign country it is important to know and follow the rules of the country that you are visiting. When you travel you are generally still subject to US law but while you’re in the foreign country it is that countries laws that you are obligated to follow.
One of the freedoms you give up in the Philippines and I suspect many other countries is “freedom of speech.” The Philippine government has been warning tourist and expats that participating in mass protest are grounds for deportation and blacklisting you from returning to the country. I’m 100% Southern and consider that to be a good thing. I’m sorry for the people that don’t understand.
I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi where I went to Jim Hill High School and Millsaps College. I worked several jobs while going to college but most often could be found behind the counter at good old “Speed-E Food.” One of the most fun jobs I ever had, because of the people that lived in South Jackson.
After college, I went to work for the IRS as a Revenue Agent. I loved it and I was good at it but my health fell apart. I had to take a position of as a Functional Automation Coordinator, which was fancy Government speak for Computer Analyst.
I finally came to my senses. Decided working wasn’t a good idea for me and applied for disability. It was granted. As soon as I was shed of my responsibilities in the states, I flew to the Philippines to find out what was out there.
What I found here has been awesome, its not perfect here but I have much more of a life here than I could have in the USA. It is just too costly to live in the US for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the USA. I miss it too. I wonder what it will feel like when I get back.
