The Seven Deadly Sins
Recently I have been trying to remember to judge my actions based on one rule. The rule that Jesus gave us. The commandment that Jesus gave us. That is to love others as you love yourself. My theory is as long as you do that, what you are doing is not a sin. Now this is not an idea I’ve had for a long time and I don’t know that it is true. But for now that is what I believe.
There are said to be seven deadly sins. I thought I’d try seeing how those sins apply to the above rule. The rule is often called the golden rule. Is the rule only one of many rules or can you apply it to everything? I’m inclined to think it is the only rule but this is an exploration for me.
Wikipedia list the Seven Deadly Sins as:
Lust (Latin, luxuria)
Gluttony (Latin, gula)
Greed (Latin, avaritia)
Sloth (Latin, acedia)
Wrath (Latin, ira)
Envy (Latin, invidia)
Pride (Latin, superbia)
I’m going to list them here and then build a sub-page to discuss each one. I’m using Wikipedia to get as impartial as I can on a religious subject that is difficult. But keep in mind, I may not agree with everything that is on the Wikipedia site regarding these.
I took a bible study course years ago about the Seven Deadly Sins. I can’t remember much about it. I do agree that pride gives birth to the other seven or at least most of them. Pride and gluttony would seem to conflict. But then being large has been and is still seen as an indication of wealth or even beauty in some cultures.
My plan is to write about these as I run across them. Lust is one I have struggled with. Seems like I could be lustful and still love others as I love myself. But we’ll try to get through these one at a time. I could use some comments from the rest of you to point out the errors of my ways and thinking.
