Monkey Business
We have just added a Filipino Monkey to our home as of 2:30PM 03-28-2009. She is much more tame than I expected but she is also quite wild and afraid. She also appears to be tired, very tired and perhaps depressed. She keeps laying her head on the cage.
I’ve already started grooming her through the bars of the cage. She doesn’t much like the cage but she’s got to feel safe before I try to handle her. I’m trying to talk to her by smacking my lips and I finally got her to return it. I think I got a monkey smile but smiles are hard to tell from threat display. When our eyes first met she glared at me. No doubt that was a threat.
She was extremely thirsty and hungry. More thirsty than hungry but very excited to food even if it was only bread. Jessie has already left to find banana for her and she’s had her fill of water too. She’s pretty thin and just a chain around her midsection. No cloth around the chain.
She is examining every molecule of that cage, trying to find the way out. Its locked as she knows how to open doors. She’s larger than George. Females probably are larger though as they are in most species of animal.
We put a mirror out for her and she’s looking at it some but she’s pretty tense and afraid. She has started giving monkey smacks and smiles now. So we are making progress. Jessie returned with the bananas and she was very happy about that. She wants more but she ate the bread too fast so we are feeding her slow. She coughed some of the bread back up. It may have been tucked away in her cheeks though.
I hate leaving her in the cage but Jessie things we should leave her in there for a day or two so she can get to know we wont hurt her. Hopefully she hasn’t been teased a lot as that will make her transition easier. She’s getting use to us already. I think we will be just fine soon. She has fangs and she can do a lot of damage when she bites as we just saw. Her water tray will no longer hold water as it has a gaping hole in it. The size of the whole is a little scary. George could never do that.
She’s having a hard time keeping food down but George did too. Perhaps its a monkey thing. We will continue to feed her slowly and comfort her. She loves to be groomed. Hard to do through the bars but she’s just too jumpy to take her out yet. She is quite strong. I’m thrilled to death to have her as is Jessie and Jason.
I have a name in mind for her. I really like Kong but not a very dainty name is it. It is my hope to get her a mate eventually. So I’m most fond of the name Queenie Juliet Kong. Some other good names have been suggested so I’ll add our first poll to this post. The above name will fit in perfectly with a male monkey, King Romeo Kong so that’s my long range goal.
We are in the process of building her a cage made of pipe and wire mesh. This will keep her outside and also protect her. She can’t be inside all the time as my landlady would have a fit, though I don’t really understand why.
She is too fall to sleep but noises keep scaring her. The maids are manually pumping water and that really bothers her even though it is outside it is somewhat loud. It sounds like an old squeaky bed of springs. I have not taken any pictures yet but I will very soon. She’s sleeping peacefully now despite the sound of the pump.

This monkey was rescued and Christine made it possible. The monkey was captured by farmers for stealing corn about a year ago when it was still quite young. The farmer was unable to give it much food and it was out in the elements day and night with only a bamboo pole for a home. we will take the best care of it we know how. I would love to hear from a zoo on how to care for it.

Hi Rusty,
Monkeys are like kids – they love to play and investigate things. Give it food in different ways so it has to investigate or search for it. i.e. put it in a can or jar that the monkey can open. It will smell the food but will will have to work to get it. Don’t make it too hard at first. Later you can increase the difficulty. Don’t do this with all its food – just a treat or two so it has a bit of adventure. Also, better get a metal water dish!:-)
Good idea on the food. She was so hungry yesterday I wanted to get as much in her as I could. She’s much better now as she will no longer eat the yellow bananas. George was the same way. The day we got him he ate the tiny little black ants after he got his fill, no more ants. But lizards, roaches, and spiders always make for a great meal.
Tell Jess to be careful with this monkey. Apparently she only like male-yeah right, typical female huh? At least now we’re sure she’s not a “dike”. No, really apparently the reason she can be antagonistic towards females is that in her previous home, girls used to tease her a lot, might even have thrown rocks and sticks, seeing she’s in open weather all the time.
Still can’t get that yellow smile thingy, Rus. I did everything you said. Everyone seems to have it, including Bob?
The monkey likes Jessie! She’s just not afraid of her. Jessie has spent more time grooming her. The monkey has groomed her as well, the monkey so far as not done that to me yet.
Oh my, yeah she’s been treated badly, that doesn’t surprise me.
It did surprise me that she seems to know the word NO or she just picks up on our tone of voice. I’m not sure which it is but she does react and stop what she’s doing when we say no.
She’ll be fine but its going to be difficult beginning she has to learn to trust us and that she’s in a better place now.
At the same, we have to establish our dominance over her in the early going or it will lead to trouble in the future.
No worries Christine, she is starting to trust me. We had a few episodes but we got her controlled.
I groomed her and she groomed me back while i was sitting on the floor. She even gave me lots of kisses. I called it a kiss, where she smacks her lips together and making those kissing sounds. :)
how about the name Kona?
I think I know what you’re doing there K&M and its cute. I like it. :)
WOW !!!….
Congratulations to both of you for taking the monkey !!!
I am almost jalous !
Hope to see her ”monkey” portraits soon.
Lucky you.
Take good care of her.
I propose this name : YTSUR (pronounce Its…)
That is your name turned around.
Thanks Robert
I like it but I can’t pronounce it. :)
There will be pictures. I’m trying to decide which site to post them on. They are ready to post. Will be coming up soon, probably today.
Jessie and myself both keep calling her Georgette. Ii guess we have George on the brain. Though she’s a lot different than George she’s also much like him and brings him back into the forefront of our minds.
I like Georgette or Georgina? :)
Georgette sounds great to me.
It’s a very nice name.
I still like Juliet. You see, I’ve made up my mind, I’ll get that male even if I can’t really every make him a pet.
So I know I’ll one day have a Romeo and Juliet. :) And I think that’s terribly cute. :)
I have huge reservations about taking one from the wild. On the other hand, if I could breed them and sell the babies at a break even rate, I could maybe start a trend and stop so many from being captured for pets.
Farmers are probably always going to protect their crops, hard to fault them as farmers usually don’t have anything to spare.
On the other hand, I’ve been told the farmer that captured this one used the P3000 he was paid to release the monkey, used the money to have a big drinking session for he and his friends. That’s actually a very Filipino thing to do and in a way its touching. He had some extra money and he shared it with his friends. On the other hand, sharing it with his family might have been a good idea too. But who am I to say. Its hard for me but I’ve not always made the best choices with money myself. That’s an understatement. :)
I should have said something before but I have posted the first set of pictures for Juliet at http://www.heyjoe.ph there is also a follow up article there. Since she’s a Philippine monkey, I think I’ll post most of my articles about her there. I may even start her own website. I probably will.
Right now I’m working on my Bogo City and Bantayan Island sites. :)
Hi,
I know you live in the Philippines and you have a girlfriend that is Filipino.
I actually think I know of someone who is under one of the “spells”.
My friend went to the Philippines ( she isnt back yet) but for some reason her family found out she has smoked weed. she ended up n a mental hospital for 6 days. she told me they also put her through, what she referred to it as, roman catholic voodoo occult ritual and she went through 7 levels of hell.
she talks about saving the world now, and the fact that everything is a sign, even numbers are bad etc.
i am worried that she is completely crazy, but i know about the practices in the Philippines.
Help ?
It sounds like your friend might have Bipolar disorder. Could be something else but she’s having delusions of grandeur. People with bipolar disorder often use illegal drugs to try to come back down to earth. She needs help and she’s not in the best place to get it. Mental illness is quite taboo here. :( She needs a doctor.
