Monkey Business

We have just added a Filipino Monkey to our home as of 2:30PM 03-28-2009.  She is much more tame than I expected but she is also quite wild and afraid.  She also appears to be tired, very tired and perhaps depressed.  She keeps laying her head on the cage.

I’ve already started grooming her through the bars of the cage.  She doesn’t much like the cage but she’s got to feel safe before I try to handle her.  I’m trying to talk to her by smacking my lips and I finally got her to return it.  I think I got a monkey smile but smiles are hard to tell from threat display.  When our eyes first met she glared at me.  No doubt that was a threat.

She was extremely thirsty and hungry.  More thirsty than hungry but very excited to food even if it was only bread.  Jessie has already left to find banana for her and she’s had her fill of water too.  She’s pretty thin and just a chain around her midsection.  No cloth around the chain.

She is examining every molecule of that cage, trying to find the way out.  Its locked as she knows how to open doors.  She’s larger than George.  Females probably are larger though as they are in most species of animal.

We put a mirror out for her and she’s looking at it some but she’s pretty tense and afraid.  She has started giving monkey smacks and smiles now.  So we are making progress.  Jessie returned with the bananas and she was very happy about that.  She wants more but she ate the bread too fast so we are feeding her slow.  She coughed some of the bread back up.  It may have been tucked away in her cheeks though.

I hate leaving her in the cage but Jessie things we should leave her in there for a day or two so she can get to know we wont hurt her.  Hopefully she hasn’t been teased a lot as that will make her transition easier.  She’s getting use to us already.  I think we will be just fine soon.  She has fangs and she can do a lot of damage when she bites as we just saw.   Her water tray will no longer hold water as it has a gaping hole in it.  The size of the whole is a little scary.  George could never do that.

She’s having a hard time keeping food down but George did too.  Perhaps its a monkey thing.  We will continue to feed her slowly and comfort her.  She loves to be groomed.  Hard to do through the bars but she’s just too jumpy to take her out yet.  She is quite strong.  I’m thrilled to death to have her as is Jessie and Jason.

I have a name in mind for her.  I really like Kong but not a very dainty name is it.   It is my hope to get her a mate eventually.  So I’m most fond of the name Queenie Juliet Kong.  Some other good names have been suggested so I’ll add our first poll to this post.   The above name will fit in perfectly with a male  monkey, King Romeo Kong so that’s my long range goal.

We are in the process of building her a cage made of pipe and wire mesh.  This will keep her outside and also protect her.  She can’t be inside all the time as my landlady would have a fit, though I don’t really understand why.

She is too fall to sleep but noises keep scaring her.  The maids are manually pumping water and that really bothers her even though it is outside it is somewhat loud. It sounds like an old squeaky bed of springs.  I have not taken any pictures yet but I will very soon.  She’s sleeping peacefully now despite the sound of the pump.

This monkey was rescued and Christine made it possible. The monkey was captured by farmers for stealing corn about a year ago when it was still quite young. The farmer was unable to give it much food and it was out in the elements day and night with only a bamboo pole for a home. we will take the best care of it we know how. I would love to hear from a zoo on how to care for it.
