Diabetes
I had another low blood sugar yesterday. Not a bad one. I felt shaky and check and was down to 79 which officially is not low but I was having some symptoms. Mostly shaky and irritable, felt like I need a Xanax but decided it was probably blood sugar. I was right, so I had some milk and two pieces of candy before I felt normal again. My legs were weak though so I didn’t go on my walk.
Weather & Exercise
I was getting ready to go for a walk when it hit. I planned to go up until the point I felt weak in my legs and decided I shouldn’t go. I’ve not gone as much in the last week as I should. I plan on going today but it is getting cloudy. If it actually rains, that would be helpful. It has been extremely hot in the last couple of weeks. Around 33 for highs at 60% or higher humidity! Its only 91 degrees which would be a cool day in July in Memphis but the humidity would be around 20% or less when its that hot. Not here, it gets even hotter just before a rainy day. Then it usually gets cooler after that. This time of the year, the cooler period doesn’t last long, usually not even an entire day.
Weight Loss
All the people giving me a hard time, telling me I’m doing everything wrong and basically following that old tired your just a lazy fat pig attitude that so many people have, I lost 10 pounds last month. Most of it came off in two stages. Five pounds at a time twice. The last five keeps trying to inch back in but I keep kicking it back down. Hopefully, I’ll be able to walk today.
I’m eating a lot of fish and I’ve been eating less of everything and walking a lot. Still not motivated as much as I was. I remember at one point I thought I might go walking twice a day. That hasn’t really been on my mind much lately. I’m having a lot of trouble staying awake lately. Well during the day anyway. I hate sleep, it waste my time!
Easter Mountain Climbing
Now I did climb a mini mountain on Easter Sunday but I cheated a bit. There were 150 stairs built into the mountain. Some call it a hill, that’s one heck of a hill and its a pretty steep climb. I went up a higher mountain on Good Friday of last year but it was a much more gradual climb. Much longer too. This year after climbing several flights of stairs and then feeling like my chest might explode, I started stopping every other flight. I think the pain in my chest is just the breast bone, its common with lupus to have some inflammation where in the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breast bone.
Philippine Monkey
I have a monkey on my head as I type. Juliet and I are the best of friends now but she hates for anyone else to get near me. I’m still waiting for her cage to be built. The welder says that some parts are not in. I wonder what it is he needs. We really need that cage built. I keep her in a small cage most of the time.
Jessie and Juliet
The monkey and Jessie are still struggling a bit. Juliet wants to “mouth” her but she gets to ruff with it. I keep pulling Juliet away which I’m beginning to think is irritating Juliet but Jessie doesn’t care to have the monkey bite her, even gently.
When Jessie left the room just now, the monkey started calling to her, looking under the door and finally pulled the fan down crashing into the floor. When Jessie came back but wasn’t paying any attention to her, I saw Juliet reach out and try to pull the fan down on purpose! I thought before she would do things to get our attention, now I’m sure of it. Aww the joys of a monkey.
Juliet knows how to push on her cage to get it to move in the direction she wants it to go. She knew that as soon as we put her in it. So she’s been in one a lot. I put a chain on the cage for Jessie to use to drag it. This morning Juliet had pulled it inside her cage so Jessie couldn’t use it. I was amazed when I saw Juliet reach outside the cage and pull on the chain in the direction she wanted to go! Of course it didn’t work since she was pulling from inside the cage, I think that old equal and opposite reaction law of newton would come into play on that!
Right now, Juliet and Jessie are getting along fine. She’s sitting on Jessie’s head grooming her. I hope they will eventually work out their relationship. Certainly making progress right now. I know Juliet loves Jessie, I see it every time Jessie leaves the room where Juliet is but she just don’t seem to know how to be gentle enough for Jessie.
Jessie and Juliet have changed to playing dress up now. I can’t believe this monkey lets her dress her up. We just might get Juliet in a dress. Probably more chance of Juliet being in one than Jessie! :)

I see that you have started to eat fish…. CONGRATULATIONS !!!
My favourite fish is mackerel (filets).
Try it if available in Philippines. It is also inexpensive, and has plenty of omega-3 (whatever it means).
When compared to all other fishes it has one of the most exquisite tastes; probably because I cook it on low heat, that helps to retain most of its taste.
Grouper, who is my No 1 choice, is unfortunately unavailable here.
Nice photo of Georgette…
Note :
There is no perfect weather nowhere Rusty. Now it is your turn to stay indoors in AC.
Here in Québec we are just getting ready to start the BBQ season.
Despite green grass everywhere, there are still mountains of snow removal in most parking lots.
And to make you feel better, there was a huge snow storm over the Easter week-end in New Brunswick.
AHHHHH…. the “great” Canadian winters !!!!
I know there i s no perfect weather but you also have to remember I have severe issues with the heat. If I get too hot, I wont be able to function for a week.
I have at least one auto-immune disorder. The sun is very bad for me. You can’t compare me to the person. I lost the 10 pounds last month. I started buying fish this month, just as I said I would.
My blood sugar has crashed the last three days preventing me from walking. I’ve been having a really hard time staying awake. I may have to make another adjustment and start walking at night. It got a little low today at walk time, I had one piece of Candy to get it up and it when over 200. Grrrr
I need to walk. I’ve not been having a lot of luck with it the last two weeks. I do the best I can.
I have limitations that I must live within.
I’ll try the mackerel. The maids have been filleting the tuna for me. It’s not cheap. Its more expensive than spam!
Jessie is not familiar with mackerel so it may not be a fish native to here?
Christine?
Jessie might not know, she’s not the super domestic type and that’s okay with me. :) Fancy cooking generally is wasted on me as i don’t like most fancy food. I wish i was normal when it comes to eating.
I didn’t actually know, so I looked it up. It’s called “Tulingan” in Visayan. Of course! That was my favourite fish when I was in PI. Now I don’t like it much, or maybe it’s because they’re just not that fresh here.
Thanks Christine. I know what Tulingan is. I just dont know its english name. Its my favorite especially when its grilled!
Would your maid fillet the fish for you Rus? She might not know how though. Filipinos don’t eat fillet fish if they have a choice. My Filipino friends here would rather pay more for whole fish than fillet. Maybe if you teach her, then she can do it for you thereafter. I’m sure it really is too much trouble for a Filipino, she might leave… :)
They know how Chrisine. Thanks!
Yes Christine, I understand what you mean by cooking the entire fish; personally I find it a little more tasty cooked/fried whole, rather than fileted.
I pay $CAN 4.30 for 400gr of locally fished (800km away) fileted mackerel while it would cost me the same price for 800gr of non fileted mackerel. That is double the price but I still buy the filets because the difference in taste is negligeable and I feel too lazy to clean the fish in my plate.
But you know what, from now on I will be alternating the whole fish and fileted fish. I think it is worth it to make that extra effort.
It is definitely tastier to cook fish whole. Smaller fishes seemed better tasting than larger fish. The fish tasted a lot nicer in PI than here. I think it’s because of its freshness. How about some squid or octupus? I love grilled occy!
Its a little difficult for me to see the fish staring back at me. :)
Thanks for finding the correct name for me! Where did you find that?
We will look for it next time. jessie had a YA YA cook it tonight, yuck. she kicked it for normal people, not good. LOL
I wouldn’t be eating it either if she kicked it! :)
Ooops, I think I may have been wrong there. This is not the original site I found it from. But if that fish had stripes, then it’s tanguige. The website below shows you the pics and names in Filipino, I think they’re in Tagalog, but might be the same? I’ve since re-checked the site, I’m sure it’s the one below. It would appear which type of mackerel. So if it is the mackerel tuna, then it’s tulingan. Anyway, have a look. Gosh, it’s like the blond, leading the blond! :)
http://wyattbelmonte.blogspot.com/2008/01/fish-names.html
Hmmm, maybe she likes it ruff.
I have no idea why I typed that. Something in my brain is not wired correctly or it is, then the impulses jump circuit at times. :)
Someone probably said kick on TV, I don’t think I can blame that one even on a spell checker.
het rusty,
this is rick. sorry that i am so long emailing you back but right after i sent you my last email i had to go on a couple of military missions and as soon as i got through with that i had a little medical emergency come up. even though i just retired last year from the cop shop in ridgeland i am most likely going to be retired medically from the military also. ive been catching up on your stories while ive been recovering the last couple of days. im glad you have written more because they are very entertaining.
i am still planning on retiring there when the military releases me and your website is still very informative ( please dont stop writing )
i hope that your health has gotten better and congrats on the new monkey.
ive decided to live in cebu in a town called magay in compostela. i will be coming there on the 14th of may and staying until the 12th of june. if i make it up to bogo city i will send you an email and i will feed you and the girlfriend dinner one night it would be nice to see a fellow mississippian in the philippines.
anyway, i was also wondering if the person that beems in on your website ( christine ) could tell me if the house that i want to buy is worth the money. i get the impression that she may be near that area since she talks about macatan island a lot. i have listed the website below. write back when you can rusty and let me know how you are doing.

Hi Rick!
Welcome back. I hope that medical emergency wasn’t a bullet or some such thing while serving.
Retirement? That’s a dang good reason to come to the Philippines. :)
I tried to visit that link but I don’t think it went to where you intended.
Thanks for monkey and other kind words. I’m about to go out now and feed her andd smoke another cigar. I’ve been smokingn them too often but will one a day kill me? I guess they might. :(
it wasnt a bullet. the cardio doctor said it was something called
sick sinus syndrom ( the cells in the a.v. node of the heart that send out the signals for the heart to beat properly were malfunctioning ) but hopefulle it is taken care of now. i am a loadmaster on the C-17 aircraft but i dont think i can be on flight status with this ailment so its only a matter of time before they retire me. hopefully i will be in the philippines for good at the end of this year or the beginning of the next.
the site that i left would not open for me either. it works if you go to google and type the site in there.
tell jessie not to be offended at me. i myself consider me a poor southern mississippi boy but i was not trying to insult her by
offering to buy yall dinner if i got a chance to make it up to bogo city next month. its like you said, its a cultural thing.
anyway, i do love the stories about your adventures there. please never stop writing or taking the pictures. i think i am becoming the #1 fan of this site.
Rick, Jessie is okay, I explained to her that its just a saying. I only mentioned i t because I love exploring the cultural differences.
I’m not going to stop writing. You might want to stop by http://cebuexperience.com (CEX) and http://bantayanislandtours.com (BIT) as I post larger pictures there. I’m going to have to stop that though as my bandwidth is going through the roof. :)
Sorry about the health issues, That can suck but if you get retirement out of it early that’s not so bad. And you can still work if you choose to so that’s great in my book.
Hi Rick, Compostela is halfway to Bogo and Bantayan Island.
I wouldn’t know re-prices in Mactan Island now. I went to primary school in Mactan Island in the 70′s before it was discovered by developers. If you found the property on the net, then chances are, you’re paying double or even triple for what the property is actually worth. You’re probably better off asking my brother. Although he lives not far from Rusty’s, he frequents Mactan because we have family there too. If you’re in a hurry, you’re better off talking to him on the phone, or preferably get your GF to talk to him because, chances are you’ll end up not understanding each other because of your accents!
I typed that link you posted. Got nothing, except ads for bits and pieces. I even looked if there was another link to a real estate. Still nothing.
Did the they put a pacemaker on you? Lucky they found it early. If you have medical issues, have you investigated health care in Cebu? I’ve heard they’ve got excellent doctors there. My brother’s doc used to practice in the US, made his money and came back. Well, I can’t blame him, he lives near the sea.
Most vets go to the VA hospital in Subic for care. Its free. :)
they did have to put a pacemaker in. the doctor said that when i was having the episodes ( about every six months ) my heart was actually stopping for five to ten seconds. the only good thing is that it was starting back by itself. hopefully everything will be o.k. now. if you know anything about pacemakers i might ask you some questions though, as far as limitations and stuff like that. they did check all my veins and arteries and the cardio doc was very surprised because i smoke and there was no build-up or blockages. i just kinda feel depressed because i was in perfect health and great condition and im only 47 years old and now i kinda feel like im part machine because of this machine in my chest. i guess things could be a lot worse though.
they do have excellent medical care in cebu ( thats the first thing that i checked when this happened because i knew i wanted to move there. the guy that im buying the house from is an american. he is flying to cebu with me next month.
i dont have a girlfriend YET but when i do move there i will be searching for one. i would like to get an apprasial on the house before i buy it though. im going to have to have the attorney there keep the land that the house is on in his law firms name because i am allowed to own the house but not the land that the house is on. i will be doing a lease agreement for the land with him along with certain stipulations in the contract so that i will be protected.
try to google viviun realestate philippines. when the site comes up look at the box in the upper right hand corner and then type
AD-126558 and then hit search and see if it will pull it up for you and rusty. it is a three story white house on the beach.
hey rusty, if you need anything from here before i come ovr there let me know. i remember that you had said that you ran out of some type of medication so if one of your family members here gets it for you or you call some in to a pharmacy here i will be happy to bring it there. just let me know if theres anything you need from here. im not leaving until around the 13th.
its a n
Hi Rick, good to hear you’re now doing well. The only thing I can remember about pacemakers is that they ask you if you have one if you are going to have MRI. Apparently the RF waves of MRI tampers with the pacemakers job, i.e. it re-sets the pacemaker, which then can give you a heart attack, especially if it re-sets this to a much faster pace, then you end up with what we call ventricular tachycardia i.e. the ventricle part of the heart pumps way too fast.
It’s past my bedtime (3pm) yeah, I’ve got night shift tonight, so hopefully if it is quiet, I’ll blog from there and post more info. on pacemakers.
christine,
if your brother knows anything about realestate appraisal or if he knows anyone who does then i would be happy to pay to get this property appraised. it would be great to have this done before i arrive there next month. i could send the funds to have this through moneygram or western union. just let me know.
Oh, I forgot. We now have modern pacemakers, that is, MRIs are not supposed to affect them. Just ask your doctor before you go if your pacemaker is MRI proof. Also, I believe you’ll have to change the batteries on those in future. Ask him how long the batteries will last. They might have invented a long-life batts now, or even a battery-less pacemakers.
I’ve just just spoken to my brother last night. It’s difficult for me to catch up with him when I’m on night shifts because when I work, he’s asleep, when I’m awake he’s at work. I’ve got days off on Sat. I’ll phone him then.
i think that the batteries last from 8 to 14 years before they have to be replaces. it is some type of activated demand device. the episodes that i was having was only lasting for a few hours, happening about every 6 months so this thing stays off unless my heart rate drops below 50 or something like that.
i am just emberassed because usually elderly people have pacemakers but the cardio doc. told me that malfunctions with the type cells that send the electric pulses to cause the heartbeat happen to a lot of people of all ages.
anyway, let me know if your brother or someone he knows can do an appraisal. i mean, its no hurry so dont put yourself out, just whenever you get the chance or have time. also, did you happen to see the house on the site ?
Hi Rick, it’s a bit quiet today, so I looked up the house. Yeah, I saw it. I Googled Vivun, then I typed the ID no. $189,000 sounds a lot to me for that! – I mean when Michael Harman (former Bogo resident) sold his house, he was only asking $70,000, furniture included. He was originally asking for $100,00, then dropped it to $70,000 because they were heading back to the US. I don’t know if he sold it? His house looked more like a Mansion, it was built on a hilltop with expansive views across the Bogo and beyond including Ocean. It wasn’t a seaside house. It really depends whether you specifically want a seaside house. I just thought, for the price they were asking, I thought it was Mactan Island! We must have had a communication breakdown here.
He said it’s 20 minutes to the city. If he meant Compostela city, yeah maybe. If he meant Cebu city, well, it will take you 45 minutes to get through Mandaue traffic alone!
So have you put a contract on it? What about building inspections? I’m sure my brother will do it for you. Do you have a preference re-who will do the valuation for you? Get my e-mail from Rusty and e-mail me re-details.
Found some info. re-pacemakers. Here’s the link.
http://www.ca-nh.com/html/pacemaker_care___instructions.html
You need to avoid putting your mobile phone on the pocket next to the pacemaker, etc… Hope that helps…
he has come down to $165,000.00 u.s. i have not put a contract on it yet and i have not had it inspected. i was going to arrange to do this once i arrived in cebu. i think that the owner did mention that cebu was about 45 minutes away but he was also saying that the new highway would be finished soon getting to cebu would take about 20 minutes on it. by valuation do you mean appraisal ? i have no preference yet but if your brother does this type work i will be happy to pay him. this way i can get this out of the way before i arrive there. the house is really not that big so i am worried that he may be asking more than it is worth.
but yes christine, the most important thing right now is the appraisal ( valuation ). i want to make sure that im not getting cheated.
i will email rusty and let him know that you said it was o.k. for me to have your email.
i know he would rather this space on his site be used for comments and openions on his stories and not for personal conversations and business. and i cant blame him. i hope one day he puts all of his adventures over there into a book. i know that it would be a bestseller. talk to you soon and thanks for the help.
My brother is the Chief of Police in nearby town 30 mins. from Bogo. But he would have contacts. Once I got your email I’ll try and catch him when he’s at lunch.
$165,000 would buy a lot of house here I think. That price should go down considerably outisde of the city.
Only citizens can by real property here. Maybe we already covered that, if so, i forgot.
I wouldn’t put my email address out here in public. Spam bots will find it and you’ll spammed to no end. Tell me when Christine has it and I’ll delete it.
I have it. You can delete it now. Thanks Rusty.
