Medical Issues For an Expat
I finally got my mind set for it. I finally accepted I needed to do it and couldn’t get out of it. Then i called the insurance company to make sure everything was setup. I asked if I had a $100 deductible and was told I had a $100 per day deductible. I could have sworn that had been done away with. I just can’t justify spending $300 to $500 right now. There are too many other issues. I will look into the possibility of different insurance but I’m probably stuck with what I have for now and there may be nothing better. Hard to say, what I need in the states may be different from here. I’d have to pay 20% of a hospital room in the states, but $100 will pay for about three days in a Philippine Hospital so 20% would be better unless there was some kind of surgery then perhaps I’m better off with the $100 per day.
This is my first month in some time that it doesn’t look like I’ll be totally broke but now I have this medical issue. I really need to just return to the US every six months but I can’t do that either. As an American expat living int he Philippines, this has been the biggest problem for me so far.

I’m sure that if the situation was explained well enough, there are many hospitals that would be glad to charge $150 per day. $100 deductible per day there is crazy. A percentage makes more sense.
As far as returning to the US every 6 mos, Guam isn’t that far from the Philippines, and may have what you require ?
Thanks John, I had not considered Guam. Thanks for that idea. Manila probably has what I need.
Yea they probably would be willing to charge me more but that wont do me any good. And I’m not going to ask for part of it back. Just not worth the risk.
Guam still has navy base. That might be a good idea.
Mostly I just need freaking blood test done every three months to ake sure the lupus has not gone active or more active and that my meds are not killing me. :)
Does anyone know of a good dentist between Bogo and Danao? I’m prepared to go a bit further than Danoa, just not all the way to Cebu. The traffic is horrendous in Mandaue, I don’t really want to go through that again. Any tips will be appreciated.
I think the worst part when someone is feeling wrong is “calling your insurance company”, as they are going to ask you such questions that blow up your mind when your are not feeling well. By the way nice post.
