Muslim Mosque at Ground Zero
When I first learned that there were plans to build a mosque at ground zero of the 9/11 attacks on the USA I was outraged. It was several months ago on a Larry King Live show. Now the news has spread throughout the USA and even the world. I still feel as if it’s a slap in the face.
Wait, what did I just say? A slap? What did Jesus say to do when slapped? As most will know, he told us to turn the other cheek! I think Jesus would help them build the mosque.
There is a lot of hate out there and often that hate is in the name of love? Hard to get a more distorted truth than that.
Of course then there is that small minor detail we call the US Constitution giving us all freedom of religion. The key word there is “all.” We seem to want to forget that our freedom can only be maintained when the freedom of everyone else is maintained. We want to control what others do. What we really want is for everyone to be like us! Probably because it makes us feel better about our own choices. It helps to confirm that we are right. Oh we of little faith, if we believed strong enough we wouldn’t need that confirmation.
Little faith in our religion but more, little faith in ourselves. Its odd where I can find insight into myself and I think, human nature. One can take a political fire storm and use it to look into themselves and learn. Or, at least, I can.
Then there is the other side of spectrum from President Obama that breaks my heart. The leader of the American Family Association has taken a different position. He holds that we should stop the building of all mosque in the USA! I hope that’s not prevalent position in the USA. I hope we are better than that. This guy is one of those that would use the Federal government to tell others how to live. I would say he needs to put on a white hood and cape and go join the Klan. They don’t represent American family values, they do not understand American values.
When Obama came out and said that they have the same right as anyone else to build that mosque he woke me up. I was angry about that mosque going there. I know some Muslims are slapping each other on the back and giving each other the equivalent of high five’s but if we respond with resentment and anger then we become like those that attack us and when we do, they win. They may not realize they win but they do. When we become exclusive and un-accepting we adopt the same thought patterns that led of those that attack us. I don’t want to give them that victory.
I don’t think building that mosque there is smart, unless the idea is to promote violence. I think that some group will attack that mosque. Perhaps that’s exactly what the extremist want. Something else they can use as propaganda to convince a young person in the mountains of Afghanistan to take up arms against us. Something they can use to convince more Muslims that all American’s hate them and want to destroy Islam.
The only real way to fight this is to get information out there to those same people. It can’t happen any time soon. They need access to information and that takes development. Something the Taliban is against. They want humans to remain in the same living conditions found in the time of Jesus and Mohammed. They believe that technology is evil. That it helps to isolate their followers is likely a side effect but I’m not sure. Perhaps it is also intentional.
Hating in the Name of Love
Which of the seven deadly sins come into play here. I would say these do:
- Pride – How Dare They!
- Anger — Blow it Up (I fear this will happen)
- Envy — Back to How Dare They
I applaud President Obama for his leadership in this and for waking me up. Though anger is understandable its not the appropriate response and I say its not the response that Christians should have. That Jesus would help them build their place of worship for another God is debatable, I don’t see how any thinking Christian could take up a position of anger and especially not one of hate. There is a lot of hate out there and often that hate is in the name of love? Hard to get a more distorted truth than that.

What I don’t seem to understand is that you guys keep referring to the mosque on ground zero. Get your facts right! Its not on ground zero, but two blocks away from it. So, S[-]FU thick headed, hate mongers….
Which guys? Did you read that article?
I don’t think so.
Your facts need work. The building was hit by the landing gear of one of the jets. Ground Zero is not limited to the the trade centers themselves.
Rusty,
1: Muslims are not patting their backs on 9/11.
2. Muslims do not worship another god, they worship the same God as the Christians, the God of Abraham.
Every community in the world has people in it that are extremists. Unfortunate, but unavoidable. Historically, there has been Christian Terrorism, Islamic terrorism, Jewish Terrorism, Hindu Terrorism in different parts of the world. Doesn’t mean one should resent a community making a temple, a church, a mosque.
Islam is a faith of peace. Just as Christianity shouldn’t be judged by acts of Hitler, people should stop judging islam by 9/11 terrorists.
For more info ,read a bit of Quran. http://free-minds.org/sites/default/files/quran.pdf
It speaks to Christians as well.
Peace,
Fraz, India.
They do not worship the same God.
Jesus Christ is God, Muslim’s do not worship Christ. So yes it is a different God than Christians worship but that has nothing to do with this article.
Some Muslims do pat themselves on the back for 9/11. I’ve had one Muslim tell me so. I don’t think I said all of them.
Yes every community has extremist as do both Christians and Muslim.
Last i checked, Jesus Christ (in Christianity) was Son of God, not THE God. That is God the Father. The Lord of all the prophets in the Old Testament. I am a muslim, my wife is a Catholic, and we both worship the same God. But you’re right, that is not the point of discussion here, or of your article.
I just have one request brother. Don’t act in spite or spread it. Spread knowledge and peace.
These are times when all of us need to be particularly fair to each of us.
May God bless the good-doers.
Fraz
Fraz, you need to check again.
Christ is God. It is a fundamental believe of Christians. The father, the son and the holy ghost are all one in the same. The are separate but also one.
For the life of me, I don’t know why you accuse me of acting in spite. You didn’t understand or read my article.
I’m all for building that mosque there so why do you accuse me of acting in spite? I don’t get it all?
Here, since you don’t seem to understand anything I say……
The Christian doctrine of the Trinity teaches the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three persons in one Godhead.[1] The doctrine states that God is the Triune God, existing as three persons, or in the Greek hypostases,[2] but one being.[3]
That’s from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity
Spite? Check your Christianity and check your English too because you didn’t understand me!
While I’m at it. This is unique among Christianity. Christianity is the only religion where God choose to come off his thrown and subject himself to being human. That is fully human feeling all the pain and temptation of being human.
I’m still blown away by your thinking I’m spreading hate. READ THE ARTICLE before you respond.
Dear angry young man. Never said you’re spreading hate. I, in fact, ‘liked’ your article in stumbleupon because it raises many interesting points. Off this page for now. Discussions shouldn’t happen in anger.
Peace
I’m not young but thanks for saying so.
I’m not angry.
You’ve been telling me what not to do since you started. I’m sorry if I misunderstood but why did you suggest I not spread spite and untruths?
I’d feel a little better about it if the Islamic religious leaders had expressed outrage at the actions of those responsible for 911. If you recall, little or nothing was said.
Hollie, I would too but you can’t change bad behaviour by acting badly.
