Swollen Lymph Glands
Last week Jermain had the mumps. That didn’t last long at all. Then this weekend he developed huge lymph glands. I’ve never seen that much swelling before.
So off to the doctor he went yesterday. Doctor sent him home with antibiotics. Alarming to me though, Jessie told me that if it is not gone in a week, he goes back for a skin test, chest x-ray and blood test.
The doctor detected a bit of infection in his chest. I remember him coughing last month for a few days but he didn’t act sick at all. That along with a skin test caused me to worry but then that’s what I do best. Worry too much. I started thinking tuberculosis (TB). As that’s what they do to test for TB.
Jermain has no fever and that has me worried too. Swollen lymph glads usually mean that there is a strong immune system response going on. So why no fever? Swollen lymph glands can mean a lot of nasty things. I’m most familiar with it as it can also be a symptom of lupus and I’ve had my times when mine where huge, from what I was told by people that could see it. I couldn’t. :)
It appears his swelling is going down now. I’m breathing a bit of relief. I really need to stop playing doctor and scaring myself. :) I’m sure all will be fine, it almost always is. He is 2 and a half, these kinds of things are going to happen.
Hopefully there will be no need to follow up with this post as the glands will return to normal.

For those wondering about the cost of living in the Philippines… The cost for the doctor was P150. The meds were expensive by Filipino standards at about P500. This translates to about $14.00 for doctor visit AND medication.
Jermain continues to get better.
