Christmas Photos on Cebu Experience
I posted twelve pictures mostly taken on Christmas eve. They are of the boys making their Christmas stockings, something I did when I was about Jason’s age.
There are some pictures of Christmas decorations of the type I’ve only seen in the Philippines but think they have a bit of Chinese and Spanish influence about them
Take a look at Living In Cebu.

Hello Rusty
Just curious.
It looks like a really nice high quality house you are renting,
but the iron bars on windows are of some concern to me, is it a security matter ?
Do you feel secure/safe walking at night ?
P.S. Nice to see the children when they are happy.
I worry about the bars, no smoke alarms and being trapped inside is a real concern. I’m going to get some smoke alarms. Then I’ll have to find someone to install them. I can’t get to the ceilings. LOL
This home is set way back from the road. It would be easy for someone to slip in without being noticed.
The family that owns this home is well known and appears to be old money so that would have placed them more at risk, I think.
But robbery is always a concern here. There is not a lot of violent crime, there’s plenty but less than the US I think. Hard to know for sure, not sure everything gets reported. A lot of the negative articles I see come out of the press in other countries with no mention of it here. Hmm, that could be misleading too. There is plenty of negative reporting within the Philippines just not sure the press is 100% free to talk about what they wish.
Most nice homes have bars here. In Bogo city I go any place I want at any time of day. The only excepting might be the squatters area near the Bogo City jail. I’ve gone down there plenty of times but I have picked up some strange looks at times. I probably wouldn’t go there at night.
I feel very safe in Bogo. I didn’t feel as safe in Cebu City but safer there than i would in many places within Memphis, Tn which is averaging one murder a day and is ranked number 1 or number 2 consistently in violent crime in the US.
I can go any where in Bogo with my cell phone out, one should not do that in Cebu, Manila or any large Philippine city. Cell phones are almost the same as cash here.
Thank you for answering.
I am very cautious when it comes to travelling to foreign (third world) countries. I am always the guy who gets the unconfortable looks. Being 6′-2” doesn’t help. I never know if it is my height or is it the other reason.
I call it THE GRINGO syndrome.
That is why, small,… really small islands do make me feel safer. Preferably islands with less than 10 000 souls.
Talking about better climate… did you try an island with constant breeze. Living in Bogo city you probably get none except on really windy days, while if you would live on a “breezy”, facing open ocean island you would get it all the time or almost.
I say this because I lived on an island like that and the breeze makes a huge difference.
Being high-up, 100ft high or more is even better.
Just a thought.
P.S. Just released, an interesting statistic: in Montréal (3.5 million people) we had 29 homicides in 2008.
I live one hour outside of Montréal in St Hyacinthe, a place of 80 000 people… zero homicides in 2008.
Maybe the temperature helps, it is -14C this morning with tons of snow. Just a little joke.
Have a happy day
That’s a pretty stunningly low number of homicides. Seems to low to believe but I’ll believe you since I have no reason not too. :) We have that many a month in Memphis, where I came from. You sure that’s not homicide by guns? When Michael More came out with his anti-gun film a few years back, he through out some stats that made the murder rate in the US appear to be much higher than other countries. But once you looked at per capita, and included all types of homicide, the US drops down, way down in the listings. I’m not anti More but he loose credibility with me on that.
The Philippines is safer than most US cities, especially if you go to the Visayas. People get angry with me but I would stay out of Mindanao. They say I have a misinformed view, perhaps but I have seen too many bombs going off in that area.
No, not a lot of breeze here most of the time. Cebu City had a lot more. It has been windy the last few days and cool. I wish we had this kind of temps all the time. The wind does make a huge difference as long as your outside. :) I’m extra hot natured though.
I did a quick look, homicide rates in Montreal are very low indeed.
Nice blog.. You talk more about BOGO City more than I do on my blog… Thnx …
Hi Jan,
I visited your blog, added you on Facebook too.
