Wal-mart Black Friday Stampede is Embarrassing
Now that I don’t live in the US, I think I’m beginning to see the world in a different way. As you probably know, a 24 year old man was killed Friday morning that was working as a temporary employee. It seems that the customers waiting outside for the store to open. Was it to open at 5am? I don’t know. The tragedy happened when mob mentality set in and the waiting customers broke the doors down. The results were the temporary worker was killed while trying to earn a few extra dollars for his family.
Way to go people! It leaves me sickened. It leaves me embarassed. Come on America stop acting like a bunch of selfish children! What got into these people during this season of peace and love? A celebration for most of us in the US of the birth of Jesus and God becoming one of us. The good news, the king of the world has come and he comes as a child dependent upon humans and in very humble beginnings.
Reading Jesus’ story, one finds almost never ending forgiveness. Of Understanding and a message of incredible love. And during this celebration we have come to the point were we run over people and break down doors to make sure we save the most money or to get our child that gift they think they must have. How much will that gift matter in even a year. Not too likely it will mean a lot. I can remember my son being so thrilled with he-man when he was three or four perhaps five. He might remember it.
Everyone wants their child’s Christmas to be happy but to smash down doors, often just to get the best price, it surely makes the US look bad around the world. Fox news is broadcast to many parts of the world as it is here in Asia. And the world knows.
Worse though, what is this man’s family feeling now. Hopefully he had a family, not everyone does. If he doesn’t at least they will be spared the pain of this.
That reminds me of something this time of the year is extremely hard on many, especially in the US. Reach out to someone lonely. Try to find a way to make the season less painful for them. Let them know someone cares. I’ll likely write about the lonely during the holidays more later on.
Please though, no more crazy holiday stampedes.
