It is Official, Obama has Won

His acceptance speech sent chills all over my body.  It was an awesome moment and a black man will be presidents in two months should every thing go safely.  I’m sure the security around this man has been ramped up to extraordinary at this point.

The Klan and the Nazi have been blunted but they are still active.  When I left Jackson Ms. nearly 30 years ago the KKK was often in the middle of the streets collecting money.  I hated seeing that.  I suspect that doesn’t still go on.  I hope not.  With that said, they have the right to protest, speak or do anything else that others have the right to do.

We have gone from the Klan in the streets to a black man being elected to the most powerful position in the world.  There is a lot of hope riding on this man.  When he announced he was running, I thought there was just no way he could win.  Wow, did he prove me wrong.

McCain has conceded and President-elect Obama has made what may have been his most eloquent speech yet.   His speech was not about himself, instead it was about the American People.  He understands that we want our country back.  He said the result was not about him and he understood that.  He called upon the words of Martin Luther King Jr.

I can remember the FBI showing up at doors in Jackson, Ms. asking about bombings.  I have seen a lot of racism form both blacks and whites.  I have been the victim of racism more than once.  I personally know some African Americans that will see this as a way to gain more power, they have the wrong person.  President-elect Barack Obama is not going to be a party to that.

Listen to me, I actually trust and have hope about the political process in the USA.  I have not had that in a long time.  I even stopped voting for a while, mostly because I couldn’t handle the lines with the health issues I had going on.  Being able to vote absentee helped me with that and talking to a conservative friend a few months ago kicked me in the but and got me into the process.

Obama said something after winning, he said “I need your help.” Politicians never say that.  He mentioned gays in his acceptance speech.  He is all inclusive and why wouldn’t he be.  He is a half white, half black man.  That’s what my hope is about.  That we can heal some wounds.  We have the chance.  A chance I didn’t see coming.  I hope that others will join in and this bottom up approach.  We have a chance to make a change and a big change in direction.

It appears that we will have a democratic majority in both houses but not a large enough majority to prevent filibusters in the senate.  That may be a  good thing if the parties will work together.  That seems like a long shot to me.  That is why Obama said I need your help.  Expect Obama to use the internet, you should get on his mailing list regardless of your party affiliation.

We can’t expect too much, but we shouldn’t expect too little either.  I don’t think he’ll give up and we can’t give up either.   We have to make our senators and representatives know that we have had enough of fighting for one party.  We want, we must see things get better and for the first time in a long time, a lot of us believe it can happen.
