Robert Gates to Remain in Charge of Defense
Okay so we don’t call it that any more. It is now Department of Defense that sounds so much more peaceful. Really it does and perhaps a better name but here lately it seems to be Department of War would have been a better name. That’s the way the world sees us. They see us as the aggressor. Like it or not, that is the case.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Republican Robert Gates will stay on as Secretary of Defense. Well that is certainly reaching across the isle! The Huffington Post is not likely to be happy about it but I sure am.
I felt that George Bush bridled Robert Gates who left a job he loved, as president of a Texas College. He said at the time, that he didn’t want to leave his current job. When the president called, it was hard to say no.
It appears that President-elect also called and again it was hard to say no. I have been hoping that this would go this way. Why? Because I’ve also thought he would do a great job in the position starting with listening to the generals and bearing down when politics out weighed the battle on the ground. We shouldn’t have people dying for freaking politics!
Both Clinton and Gates have praised Obama for keeping strong knowledgeable people around him. This is shaping up to be one fantastic team all the way around. I’m excited and still hopeful that real change is coming our way. I don’t think Obama can fix everything that needs fixing. My hope is he can show other politicians how it could be done so that they might continue the effort after eight more years.
