Economic Crisis of 2008 and the Expat
I’ve been pretty confused about the economic crisis that has been playing out over the last two weeks. I had my doubts that it was real at all. I’m not a very trusting person and that is heightened during an election year. But I was wrong, the crisis is real. I don’t think it is matter of averting the hard times completely but of lessening the blow.
I think that the expat with a pension or a large amount of US dollars in the bank, we will make out rather well. I don’t claim to be an expert though and there are likely many factors out there that I don’t fully understand.
I wrote a more extensive article on my Philippine expat site. Check it out here.

I’m 100% Southern and consider that to be a good thing. I’m sorry for the people that don’t understand.
I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi where I went to Jim Hill High School and Millsaps College. I worked several jobs while going to college but most often could be found behind the counter at good old “Speed-E Food.” One of the most fun jobs I ever had, because of the people that lived in South Jackson.
After college, I went to work for the IRS as a Revenue Agent. I loved it and I was good at it but my health fell apart. I had to take a position of as a Functional Automation Coordinator, which was fancy Government speak for Computer Analyst.
I finally came to my senses. Decided working wasn’t a good idea for me and applied for disability. It was granted. As soon as I was shed of my responsibilities in the states, I flew to the Philippines to find out what was out there.
What I found here has been awesome, its not perfect here but I have much more of a life here than I could have in the USA. It is just too costly to live in the US for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the USA. I miss it too. I wonder what it will feel like when I get back.
