Financial Crisis or Political Posturing
McCain Vs. Obama
The Republican Flip-Flop.
John McCain says Barack Obama is not allowed to be undecided as president.
Now John McCain says he has no position on the best plan for the bailing out the economy at this time. Isn’t that being undecided? Which Obama was not allowed to do?
A few weeks ago McCain was not in favor of a government bailout of any company. President Bush comes out in favor and guess what, McCain’s position changes. now he thinks it is necessary.
Like Bush, McCain thought the economy was fundamentally sound. Now Bush says
The market is not functioning properly. There has been a widespread loss of confidence, and major sectors of America’s financial system are at risk of shutting down.
President Bush also said:
We are in the midst of a serious financial crisis, and the federal government is responding with decisive action
Bush also said that we are at the beginning of a “long and painful recession.”
Obama calls McCain’s office to suggest the two of them come out with a joint statement showing unity in regarding the financial situation which, according to some is in crisis.
McCain then calls Dave Letterman to tell him that he has decided to suspend his campaign and thus wouldn’t be able to keep his scheduled appearance on the the show that night.
At the same time McCain was to be on Letterman’s TV Show he was getting makeup applied at the desk of Katie Couric. McCain was too busy to show up for the taping of Letterman’s late night show but had time for the prime time news. Just in case you didn’t read it, it was at THE SAME TIME HE WAS DUE To APPEAR ON LETTERMAN.
Letterman brought this out on his show by tapping into a live feed of McCain sitting at Couric’s desk. That would obviously mean that McCain was taking steps to get more publicity out of the so called crisis.
Barack Obama admitted that McCain mentioned to him that he might suspend campaigning but not in a way that indicated he had reached a decision. But it appears that McCain came to his decision soon after talking to Obama.
I believe what happened was that McCain saw Obama’s phone call as political posturing by Obama. So in an attempt to one up him, he decided unilaterally to suspend his campaign so that he could return to congress to devote all his time on the financial crises. The same crisis that didn’t exist until McCain started slipping in the polls again.
Republican’s Handled by Lobbyist
Chris Matthews of MSNBC said this move was more McCain razzle dazzle. I agree more with Dave Letterman’s assessment. This is not the McCain that honored himself and our country by his actions in the Vietnam War. Letterman hinted that McCain is being handled. I say that’s exactly what happened, it is the pattern of what has happened with all of the Republican President’s since Regan. Regan was over handled, do you remember what was being said after the first debate back in the 80′s. The handlers decided to let Regan be Regan. It is well known that Bush has been handled and now McCain is tarnishing his image by allowing the same bad advice to over take his best judgment. I hold John McCain’s past in extremely high regard, but I feel McCain has now walked away from that past. I think his handlers believe he is so highly trusted that he can say anything as long as he claims he is being noble. I no longer believe it.
Bush claims that the markets are not behaving properly. That sounds as if he means the markets are behaving in a way that does not reflect the true economy situation. That is a contradiction. If there is no problem, why on earth do we need to buy banks? Why does the Treasury need 700 billion dollars to buy companies as they fail?
The economy is behaving properly, many have said that bad times where coming and they were coming because of the huge growth in government spending and borrowing. The economy has been in a boom period for a long time. Except for the short but severe down turn after the attacks of 9/11/2001 the economy has been doing extremely well. Down turns happen, they always happen and possibly in part by investors being over optimistic by long term booms. Long term booms and irresponsible government spending is a perfect recipe for a recession. That would mean the economy has performed exactly the way it should. It is a normal correction.
Right after the Republican Convention, McCain was riding a wave of improving support for his campaign but now the bump is over. Palin is not meeting expectations and the polls are reversing back in favor of Obama. Obama’s lead is growing again. Now we have a financial crisis. Why? To give McCain the chance to come in and appear to save the economy with an economic bailout!
Republicans have been using terrorism to scare the American people for years. If they keep doing that, the democrats can put forth the position that you’ve had eight years to make it better. You’ve failed, so let us try. Thus they need a new crisis to put forth their message of fear. And what better crisis in an election year than the wallet.
People have been saying for years that American’s vote their wallet. There is only one way to turn a crisis around that is to appear to be the super hero that saves us in the end. The new republican to bring in change. I say there is no change at all. instead, there is more handling and manipulation of a Republican Politician. I don’t think it is going to work. I believe the handlers under-estimate the American people and they will see the truth.
I don’t know if there is a crisis or not. What little research I’ve seen shows that leading indicators have started pointing up but the lagging indicators are now showing up. In a down turn, some financial situations don’t show up at first. Unemployment is a lagging indicator. When the economy takes a down turn, it takes a few months before a fall in profits and cash cause employers to lay people off. As sales fall off, there is less need for purchases. As inventories build up, the manufacturing sector needs to slow production. This causes more layoffs and a decrease in growth and gross national product. These kinds of things don’t show up at the beginning of recession. In fact, they may not show up until a recession is over.
I believe that most of this crisis is created by politicians trying to scare us into voting for the same people that caused it in the first place. If so, then the Republicans are desperate.
