How to Become a Blogger

So you want to start your own web page?  I think that’s a great idea.  Everyone can learn to do it.  You can even get started for free.  I don’t recommend that though, you’re better off buying a domain name for around 10 bucks a year and pay for your hosting for less than $10 a month.

First I’ll mention a couple of free places to get started.  I don’t recommend them as its hard to get your site recognized and ranked well by the search engines.  It is possible but it is difficult.  On the up-side, you can learn a bit with this free site and then walk away from it if you do yourself any harm.  A new webmaster, sometimes makes mistakes trying to get their site noticed.  You probably wont, but it is possible.

If I was going to use a free service it would be on Blogger.com .  The reason I’d use this system is that you can easily add Google AdSense to your site.  Now, don’t join Adsense immediately, write on your site for a week or two at least and then apply for an AdSense account.  The second place I’d go is WordPress.com .  The advantage of using this system is that you’ll be using the software most blogs are powered by.  This site and most of my sites are WordPress sites.  These kinds of sites rank well, the software is free and is easy to learn.  With that said, I’d pay for hosting and I would get it from Hostgator.com

I get my hosting from Hostgator.  I’ve tried a LOT of different host and this is the best I’ve had.  They can also provide you with the support you need.  With any host, be sure to get C-panel as your control panel.  It will simplify things for you.  Don’t go out and get an entire server.  You really don’t need that yet.  If you’re lucky and work hard, someday you’ll need it.  But wait until you’ve earned enough to justifies it.

It will likely take some time before you earn any money.  You’ll get better at it as time goes by.  So this is not a get rich quick thing and if anyone tells you otherwise, I’d run.  On the other hand, if you’re looking for some spending money in retirement, this can go a long way.  Some people make a lot of money on the web.  I’d be happy to earn $500 a month and I don’t earn any where close to that yet.  I will though.

You might wonder what you can write about,  Write about what you know.  If that means you write about yourself then do that.  Anything to get you started.  It will be a hair pulling, frustrating thing for a while.  How much so depends on what you already know about computers.  You don’t have to know a lot.  You don’t have to know HTML but it would help.  You’ll need to learn it at some point.  Leaning PHP would be the next hurdle to cross.   Don’t try to master it all fast.  Take it slow and easy.  Try to make it fun so you wont give up easily.  It takes time but you can do it.

I will write more stories on this topic and point  you to some great learning aids.  What I can’t do is hold your hand and walk you through it.  I don’t have the time and I don’t really have the patience.
